If the implant was fitted during the first 5 days of a normal period it will work immediately, however if it was fitted at any other time in your cycle it will take 7 days to work. The withdrawal method is not a reliable form of contracpetion and we would recommend that if it was fitted at any other time in your cycle, then you attend one of our clinics for emergency contraception or your local pharmacist or GP.

My partner has a contraceptive implant, and neither of us have STIs (were recently checked for Chlamydia). Are there still any risks of having regular unprotected (by which I mean no condoms) sex?
The implant is a very effective form of contraception which will protect you from unplanned pregnancy. A chlamydia test only tests for chlamydia, and as not all STIs have signs or symptoms it is important to have a full STI test with every change of partner. Please call or email us to make an appointment if you think you and your partner need a full STI test.

Hello, my boyfriend and I have been together for 7 months now and both of us are free from any sexually transmitted diseases and we are loyal to each other and not in an open relationship. However, I still feel paranoid about being infected via accidents etc because I've read comments online that some people can be infected even doing non sexual and low- to no risk activities such as sharing toothpaste or touching dried bodily fluids. Should I seek mental health advice or is this a result of being too cautious about my health and well-being? Thank you.
If you have any concern about your sexual health you should book an appointment by ringing us on 0300 1245010.

We would advise you come in for screening if you are worried. You can contact us on 0300 1245010 to make an appointment and explain you have no symptoms but require screening.

If you email us your details to firstname.lastname@example.org we can give you more details.
Hello, I live in university halls and I discovered that the previous tenant that lived in my room left behind some semen underneath and the wall under it. I am certain that it is dry semen and I'm just wondering if it still poses of danger when it comes to transmitting STI's or viruses? Because the area of the desk which has the dry bodily fluid is where I put my hands whenever I pull my chair closer to my desk when I'm studying. I'm just scared about it since my hands will sometimes be dry and cracks.
Please be reassured that you are not at risk of any STIs, we would recommend you get some rubber gloves and cleaning products and give the wall a good clean.

I've been diagnosed with herpes. My boyfriend went to get tested for it to but was asked a load of questions and told he didn't need to be tested for it. He explained that I have more than one medical condition and the nurse told him it was basically my bodies immune system being low and couldn't fight off the bacteria. I just want to know if this is correct or not.
If your boyfriend did not have symptoms during his visit he would not have needed a test. If you have ongoing concerns it may be helpful if you arrange an appointment to meet and talk with a Health Advisor together. You can ring us on 0300 1245010 to arrange this.

Not having had a period for 9 yrs I'm worried I might be pregnant. Have been having some odd symptoms which are either period type symptoms without the bleeding or I'm pregnant. Please could you email us at SWISH@sompar.nhs.uk with your original question (above) and with your name and contact details and one of our nurses will contact you today to chat through this with you.

I've been spotting for 3 weeks straight. I'm on the combined pill and just had the break where I only had a one day period. I started the pill again yesterday. This is the first break from the pill as last time I went straight on to the next packet. I was ill for 2 weeks when the spitting started and went to the doctors but they didn't know what was wrong. I'm no longer ill but my vagina is tender and itchy these last couple of days. Is this an infection? What should I do?
Thank you for your question. There can be many reasons why you have been bleeding while you have been taking your pill. To make sure we are offering you the right advice please can you call the booking line or email us at SWISH@sompar.nhs.uk to make and appointment to come and see one of our nurses or doctors

I don't like blood tests, can I have a screening without a blood test?
Some STI tests do not require your blood to be taken, for example, testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea usually requires a urine sample from men and a self-taken vaginal swab from women. However testing for some other sexual transmitted infections including HIV and syphilis does require a blood test. You are free to refuse to have your blood taken, however our staff are very experienced at taking blood we would always recommend having a full STI screen

I just wanted you to know that I visited your clinic today. All of the staff that I encountered were professional, friendly and sympathetic which is just what you need when going to somewhere like this. I was really nervous but after my visit today I had absolutely no reason to be at all. It was a really good experience, even if I didn't want to actually go!
We really appreciate your feedback. Thank you from the SWISH team.
I think I have a tampax stuck inside me. Can you help?

Hi, I have started taking the maexni combin pill since Monday 27th June, all week I have been feeling ill, diarrhoea , was sick twice Tuesday morning after taking the pill at 9pm Monday. Is this a side effect to the pill, if so what should I do?
Your symptoms may be as a result of a virus and hopefully have started to ease. However, if you are still expereincing them and feel they may be a side-effect of the medication, please get in touch with us via our booking line.
I have trouble getting wet before sex, this never used to be an issue with my boyfriend but now we have been together 8 months it is very rare I am physically aroused before sex. This correlates with me starting the mini pill Desogestrel, when we used condoms I had a higher sex drive and had no problem getting wet. Could it be my contraception that is affecting this?
Thank you for your question. Changes in libido (sex drive) can, for some people, be affected by hormonal contraception such as Desogestrel; this can be an increase or decrease in libido. We would recommend you make an appointment to discuss this with one of our nurses or doctors as there may be other reasons why you have noticed a change. We offer the full range of contraception and if you need to change method we will discuss these options with you.

Can I be seen in Yeovil?
We do have a clinic running from Yeovil District Hospital and the website can provide up-to-date clinic times. We are creating a new clinic space in Yeovil that will offer purpose built clinic rooms and will have access to free parking. We hope this will be ready sometime over the summer but will keep the website updated with clinic locations and times until then.
How long will I wait when I come to walk-in clinic?
We operate walk-in clinics at various points during the week. When you arrive your details will be taken and you will be asked to wait. At times, if the clinic is busy, you will be informed that we have no further slots available and we will try to book you a convenient appointment. The length of wait will depend on how many people have arrived before you but our reception colleagues will always be happy to give you some idea of how long this will be. We are planning on changing the name of our walk-in clinic to ‘sit and wait’ to reflect that you may be able to see someone as soon as you arrive. We are also hoping to make sit and wait appointments available on more days and in more of our venues.
Where should I go to get confirmation of suspected type 2 HSV? I want episodic treatment but don't want to waste my (and GP's) time going to GP if they will refer me to yourselves.
We would advise that if you experience symptoms of HSV to phone our booking line on 0300 1245010 to discuss coming in for a consultation. We would then be able to take samples to confirm HSV typology and commence treatment if clinically required. We would also offer a full STI screen. Please note some GP's can also offer this service.
Can I make an appointment
You can make an appointment by calling our booking line on 0300 1245010 between 9am and 3pm. Our booking line has been very busy since SWISH began on 1st April but we now have additional colleagues responding to calls and you should be able to get though without any difficulty. Please be aware that some parts of the day are busier than others and you may wait slightly longer; these times include Monday’s and most mornings before 11am. If you have any difficulty you can also email us on SWISH@sompar.nhs.uk. We are also working on an online booking system and we hope this will be available in the summer.
