I lost my virginity exactly 7 days ago and I came on my period 2 days after (I think this may have something to do with the problem). I am still quite itchy down there, it feels like it is inside but not deep. I didn't know if this had something to do with the fact that I practically started using tampons straight after having sex for the first time and whether this would irritate my vagina? A condom was used throughout and he said he was clear of sti/d's anyway. I don't know whether it is to do with the break in the hymen or whether it is something totally different. I suppose my question is why am I still itchy after 7 days, is it normal or do I need to get checked? Thanks.

Dear Swish, for what types of ureaplasma, mycoplasma, chlamydia, herpes, HPV, trichomonas, staphylococcus, escherichia coli do you do test from male penis?
At Swish we offer a range of tests based on sexual history. We do not currently test for ureaplasma or mycoplasma and we do not routinely test men for trichomoniasis or staphylococcus or esceherichia coli, however these can be done if symptoms indicate a need.
Chlamydia is tested for routinely via a urine sample in males, Herpes is only tested for if there are symptoms present. Swabs are not routinely taken from the penis as our commonly done tests can be done on a urine sample, however if symptoms are present, a swab may be taken from the penis to help us make a diagnosis.
To carry out the correct tests we would need to discuss your sexual history with you.
My new boyfriend and I had sex for the first time on Sunday and on Monday one of his testicles became swollen, they were a bit better the following evening but now both testicles are swollen. Does this sounds like STI symptoms? He has no other signs or symptoms.
Thank you for asking the question and contacting Swish, to ensure we are giving the right advice we do need to see your partner for a consultation. Please phone us on our booking line number between 9 - 5pm or email us via the "book appointment" tab to make an appointment.

If your practice is not part of this arrangement we may be able to help once we have checked this out and spoken with our commissioners. If in doubt do call us on 03001245010.

My partner has a contraceptive implant, and neither of us have STIs (were recently checked for Chlamydia). Are there still any risks of having regular unprotected (by which I mean no condoms) sex?
The implant is a very effective form of contraception which will protect you from unplanned pregnancy. A chlamydia test only tests for chlamydia, and as not all STIs have signs or symptoms it is important to have a full STI test with every change of partner. Please call or email us to make an appointment if you think you and your partner need a full STI test.

Hello, my boyfriend and I have been together for 7 months now and both of us are free from any sexually transmitted diseases and we are loyal to each other and not in an open relationship. However, I still feel paranoid about being infected via accidents etc because I've read comments online that some people can be infected even doing non sexual and low- to no risk activities such as sharing toothpaste or touching dried bodily fluids. Should I seek mental health advice or is this a result of being too cautious about my health and well-being? Thank you.
If you have any concern about your sexual health you should book an appointment by ringing us on 0300 1245010.
I have had a relationship for 5 years with one person, my new partner was with someone for 6 years and they only been with each other. We would advise you come in for screening if you are worried. You can contact us on 0300 1245010 to make an appointment and explain you have no symptoms but require screening.

If you email us your details to firstname.lastname@example.org we can give you more details.
Hello, I live in university halls and I discovered that the previous tenant that lived in my room left behind some semen underneath and the wall under it. I am certain that it is dry semen and I'm just wondering if it still poses of danger when it comes to transmitting STI's or viruses? Because the area of the desk which has the dry bodily fluid is where I put my hands whenever I pull my chair closer to my desk when I'm studying. I'm just scared about it since my hands will sometimes be dry and cracks.
Please be reassured that you are not at risk of any STIs, we would recommend you get some rubber gloves and cleaning products and give the wall a good clean.

My mum thought I was possibly going through a miscarriage, new years eve I stopped taking my pill (gedarel 30/150) and had my usual breakthrough bleeding. It finished Tuesday just gone. I've been diagnosed with herpes. My boyfriend went to get tested for it to but was asked a load of questions and told he didn't need to be tested for it. He explained that I have more than one medical condition and the nurse told him it was basically my bodies immune system being low and couldn't fight off the bacteria. I just want to know if this is correct or not.
If your boyfriend did not have symptoms during his visit he would not have needed a test. If you have ongoing concerns it may be helpful if you arrange an appointment to meet and talk with a Health Advisor together. You can ring us on 0300 1245010 to arrange this.

This one ran out in September and I didn't realise (moved house and lost the paper work with the date on it). Last week I had an unexpected encounter and he didn't wear a condom. Not having had a period for 9 yrs I'm worried I might be pregnant. Have been having some odd symptoms which are either period type symptoms without the bleeding or I'm pregnant. Please could you email us at SWISH@sompar.nhs.uk with your original question (above) and with your name and contact details and one of our nurses will contact you today to chat through this with you.

From 1st April 2016 our new service known as the Somerset Wide Integrated Sexual Health Service launched, we aim to provide a ‘one stop shop’ offering free and open-access to sexual health and contraceptive services to support healthy sexual and reproductive choices.
Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) services from Musgrove and Yeovil hospitals came together with the Contraceptive and Sexual Health (CASH) service to provide this new service in various locations around Somerset, we are committed to providing equal access to sexual health and contraceptive services in Somerset.
Please visit our 'where to find us page' to find a clinic near you.

I'm 41; can I still get condoms free?
Yes you can in one of two ways. you can either visit the website of our partner agency where you will find a form to fill out. If you meet the criteria you may be eligible for free condoms https://www.eddystone.org.uk/free-condoms. Alternatively you can register at one of our clinics and you can find the detail of venues and times on the website.

You should contact the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) on 03457 304030.
I had sex while using a condom with a new partner for the first time, but unprotected oral. I think I see symptoms that may not be there. Would I be likely to have caught something if they had something or am I worried for no reason?
Oral sex is one of the ways an STI could be passed on. Therefore it would be a good idea for you to get in touch to receive screening rather than continue to worry. You can contact us on 0300 1245010.
I have all the symptoms of genital herpes; I went to the doctor several days ago and he said it might be thrush (did not look) - and gave me canesten which hasn't helped, its getting more and more painful and difficult to walk. I have had unprotected sex recently, so it is likely to be an STI I think? Is it worth me coming in for treatment for herpes, or is there none?
You should make an appointment for a full screen so that we can advise and treat you appropriately. Please get in touch on 0300 1245010.
I regularly attended the clinic in Taunton musgrove with a recurrent problem. Will the same staff be there at the new clinic as I'm extremely anxious about explaining everything again?
Some of the GU staff who worked at Musgrove Park Hopsital are now with us at SWISH. There are also additional new colleagues. When we receive your information during the appointment we should be able to access your previous information to limit the need for repeat questions. We would be asking for up-to-date information. If you remain concerned do contact us on SWISH@sompar.nhs.uk.
What are your times and days for walk-in at Taunton clinic?

I've been spotting for 3 weeks straight. I'm on the combined pill and just had the break where I only had a one day period. I started the pill again yesterday. This is the first break from the pill as last time I went straight on to the next packet. I was ill for 2 weeks when the spitting started and went to the doctors but they didn't know what was wrong. I'm no longer ill but my vagina is tender and itchy these last couple of days. Is this an infection? What should I do?
Thank you for your question. There can be many reasons why you have been bleeding while you have been taking your pill. To make sure we are offering you the right advice please can you call the booking line or email us at SWISH@sompar.nhs.uk to make and appointment to come and see one of our nurses or doctors

I don't like blood tests, can I have a screening without a blood test?
Some STI tests do not require your blood to be taken, for example, testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea usually requires a urine sample from men and a self-taken vaginal swab from women. However testing for some other sexual transmitted infections including HIV and syphilis does require a blood test. You are free to refuse to have your blood taken, however our staff are very experienced at taking blood we would always recommend having a full STI screen

I just wanted you to know that I visited your clinic today. All of the staff that I encountered were professional, friendly and sympathetic which is just what you need when going to somewhere like this. I was really nervous but after my visit today I had absolutely no reason to be at all. It was a really good experience, even if I didn't want to actually go!
We really appreciate your feedback. Thank you from the SWISH team.
I think I have a tampax stuck inside me. Can you help?
Tampons if left in can become compressed at the top of your vagina, this can make it difficult for you to feel the tampon or pull it out. Please phone our booking line or email us at SWISH@sompar.nhs.uk to make an appointment to have it removed.

Hi, I have started taking the maexni combin pill since Monday 27th June, all week I have been feeling ill, diarrhoea , was sick twice Tuesday morning after taking the pill at 9pm Monday. Is this a side effect to the pill, if so what should I do?
Your symptoms may be as a result of a virus and hopefully have started to ease. However, if you are still expereincing them and feel they may be a side-effect of the medication, please get in touch with us via our booking line.
I have trouble getting wet before sex, this never used to be an issue with my boyfriend but now we have been together 8 months it is very rare I am physically aroused before sex. This correlates with me starting the mini pill Desogestrel, when we used condoms I had a higher sex drive and had no problem getting wet. Could it be my contraception that is affecting this?
Thank you for your question. Changes in libido (sex drive) can, for some people, be affected by hormonal contraception such as Desogestrel; this can be an increase or decrease in libido. We would recommend you make an appointment to discuss this with one of our nurses or doctors as there may be other reasons why you have noticed a change. We offer the full range of contraception and if you need to change method we will discuss these options with you.

Can I be seen in Yeovil?
We do have a clinic running from Yeovil District Hospital and the website can provide up-to-date clinic times. We are creating a new clinic space in Yeovil that will offer purpose built clinic rooms and will have access to free parking. We hope this will be ready sometime over the summer but will keep the website updated with clinic locations and times until then.
How long will I wait when I come to walk-in clinic?
We operate walk-in clinics at various points during the week. When you arrive your details will be taken and you will be asked to wait. At times, if the clinic is busy, you will be informed that we have no further slots available and we will try to book you a convenient appointment. The length of wait will depend on how many people have arrived before you but our reception colleagues will always be happy to give you some idea of how long this will be. We are planning on changing the name of our walk-in clinic to ‘sit and wait’ to reflect that you may be able to see someone as soon as you arrive. We are also hoping to make sit and wait appointments available on more days and in more of our venues.
Where should I go to get confirmation of suspected type 2 HSV? I want episodic treatment but don't want to waste my (and GP's) time going to GP if they will refer me to yourselves.
We would advise that if you experience symptoms of HSV to phone our booking line on 0300 1245010 to discuss coming in for a consultation. We would then be able to take samples to confirm HSV typology and commence treatment if clinically required. We would also offer a full STI screen. Please note some GP's can also offer this service.
