I’ve been bleeding on the implant now for 2 weeks straight. It’s light but my belly really hurts sometimes and it’s like the blood isn’t heavy enough to come down but when I wipe it’s there. Is this my body just getting use to the implant I have had for a month

Irregular bleeding on the implant is common especially in the the first month. If this does not settle or you are concerned please visit the service who fitted your implant.

I have had the copper coil for 2 months now. Usually my periods are every 35 days but after the coil it was every 33 days for 2 months. They were normal though. Recently I have only been able to feel 1 string and now this one string has gotten very short. My period was meant to come 3 days ago and now on day 38 I have been getting light cramping and occasional brown and pink discharge. Could this be because the coil has got lodged/gone further up causing my period not to come?

Please give our booking line number a call to make an appointment for a coil check (0300 1245010), or if it was fitted with your GP please give the surgery a call.  If you are worried and want to be seen urgently please go to A&E.

I got the implant put in and 3-4 weeks later I had a period but it ended and 4 days later I had the worst pain ever and started bleeding again. What could that mean?

It is not unusual to have some irregular bleeding with the implant, it may settle down. However if you have severe pain and it has not settled you should see your GP to discuss this.

Hi. I’m scared to have sex in case I get a STI. Do I need to get tested if I have sex with a condom?

Please try not to worry, having sex with a condom does significantly reduce your risk of an STI and we would always recommend condom use.

The best way to ensure you and your partner do not have a STI is to come and have a STI check before you have sex.  A STI check is simple a pee in a pot for a man and a self-taken vaginal swab for a woman and a quick blood test for both (if needed). We only need to examine patients who have symptoms they are worried about.

Hi, I had protected anal sex yesterday, but I didnt ask if he was clean, am I ok?

Thanks for your question, it's great that you used a condom for anal sex as it will significantly reduce your risk of STIs. However condoms do not protect you 100% of the time so we would always recommend you attend one our clinics for a STI screen.

Having a STI is not about being clean or dirty and you can't tell by looking at someone if they have an infection, we would always recommend a STI screen with each change of partner.

What does a full screening include?

A full screen for a patient without any symptoms of concern,  or any additional risk factors,  includes testing for Chlamydia, Gonnorrhoea, HIV and Syphilis.

I had a procedure and coil fitted on the 9th April nothing nasty found. Had some discharge and then went straight into a period. I have rung the surgery and they gave me your information so my question is should I still be bleeding?

We are unable to give you specific advice as we don't know which type of coil you have had fitted. It is normal to have some irregular bleeding for a few weeks after having a coil fitted, however if you are experiencing pain or the bleeding is concerning you please do contact  the service the service that fitted the coil and ask to see a health professional.

I have been married for nearly 20 years and not strayed from my partner in that time. I am as certain as anyone can be that she has been faithful also. Around last July/August 2017 I noticed a small raised “hard skin” type lump around a hair follicle at the base of my penis shaft just up from my scrotum. I thought maybe I’d scratched myself in that “blokey” way that we do, and it was part of the healing process. It didn’t go though and as it persisted it began to worry me more. I did some googling and was as certain as I could be that it wasn’t genital warts or anything sinister. It persisted, so about 3 months ago I went to my GP to get it checked. He has confirmed it wasn’t a genital wart or STI but was most likely a plantar wart. My wife over the years has had warts on a couple of her fingers so after discussion on a second visit (where he checked to see if it had grown or spread – it hadn’t) the suggestion was that I probably got it from her touching me while her wart was active. My GP suggested that normal body healing processes would mean that it would resolve itself but that it could take up to 10-12 months. I really hate having it there, it’s still relatively flat and small but doesn’t show any signs of disappearing yet. Is this something I can treat with a normal “over the counter” wart removal cream or do I just need to let it run its course?

We would recommend letting your GP know this is troubling you. They will be able to advise any solutions for faster removal. You can also speak with a pharmacist and most chemists have a quiet area for you to request confidential discussion takes place.

Can I have my nexplanon implant removed at a walk-in clinic?

Can the depo injection cause infertility?

Why don’t you standardly check for trich in the regular sexual screening test if it’s so common ?

Whilst Trichomonas is the most common non-viral STI in the world it is less common in the UK. It is not included in our standard screening process unless we feel a patient is at risk or if there are symptoms. We continually review our screening packages to ensure we respond to the the changing picture of sexual health both nationally and locally.

Can you get checked on your period for everything?

Yes we can do a sexual health screen while you are on your period. If you have some symptoms of concern then you may need to return but we can discuss this when you attend.

How do I know what size condom I need?

If you are under the age of 19 we could register you for C-Card and there is a size guide inside our packs. You can find details here https://swishservices.co.uk/what-is-a-c-card/ If you are over 19 please email us your details at swish@sompar.nhs.uk and we can arrange for you to collect some samples and guidance. A condom should always fit snugly over a penis, leaving no tight or baggy spots. If rolled over a penis that is not yet fully erect, it will fit awkwardly and be more likely to fall off or tear during sex. The condom should go from the package to your genitals relatively quickly.

Hi. I've been tested for Chlamydia, HIV, Syphilis, Gonorrhoea, Herpes, Hepatitis, with all negative results. I still have STI symptoms 4 months later, without any sexual contact in this time. Do you test for Trichomoniasis and other STI's?

Yes we do and if you continue to have symptoms. If you email us on swish@sompar.nhs.uk you can tell us your name so that we can check your testing history. It would also be helpful to know your ongoing symptoms.

I have been using an implant for contraception for over 10 years; I am 48. Usually I do not have any menstrual bleeding. About 6 months ago my bleeding started again. It is GP or SWISH? Do you know why this is happening?

There are various reasons why this may be happening. Not knowing if your implant has been recently changed it is not possible to tell if your bleeding is likely to be linked to your contraception. We would recommend you visit your GP to explain your symptoms and ensure you have had your regular cervical smear. Your GP will  then be able to advise if you need support from Gynaecology or SWISH.

What STIs do you check for?

We generally screen for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, HIV and Syphillis if there is reason to believe, either due to sexual history or symptoms, this is necessary. More specific tests may be carried out of history and/or symptoms indicate the need. If you would like more information please email us at swish@sompar.nhs.uk

I am an older female with what i think is genital herpes. I have researched thoroughly on the internet to come to this diagnosis, however I am concerned that there may be other conditions which mimic the symptoms of Herpes that I am unaware of. Can i get sufficient treatment (anti-virals) over the counter or is it necessary for me to come to the clinic. Thank you

I have just started seeing someone and he's told me he's had genital warts but still has the virus? Does this ever go? Will I catch it? What does this mean?

Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) which can be passed on during sexual contact. Not everyone who has the virus develops genital warts. For most people, including those who have visible warts, the virus will be cleared from the body over time. It’s rare for genital warts to cause any long-term health problems. Please do come and see us for a sexual health screen and we can talk to you about the HPV virus.

My partner had an abortion and was tested positive for Chlamydia so had antibiotics. Now I have to take antibiotics even though I don't have Chlamydia; my partner was told I had to take them so I don't get an infection when we resume having sex.

Without knowing the full details it is hard to answer so we recommend you contact us for advice on 0300 1245010 and let us know who gave this advice and if you have had a test yourself. It is accurate that you would be at risk of Chlamydia if you continue to have unprotected sex before your partner's infection is fully cleared.

I lost my virginity exactly 7 days ago and I came on my period 2 days after (I think this may have something to do with the problem). I am still quite itchy down there, it feels like it is inside but not deep. I didn't know if this had something to do with the fact that I practically started using tampons straight after having sex for the first time and whether this would irritate my vagina? A condom was used throughout and he said he was clear of sti/d's anyway. I don't know whether it is to do with the break in the hymen or whether it is something totally different. I suppose my question is why am I still itchy after 7 days, is it normal or do I need to get checked? Thanks.

Thank you for asking a question, I think it would be good for you to come and visit us and see a nurse to talk about a healthy and safe sex life and also to discuss contracpetion. Please contact us online or by phone to make an appointment.

Dear Swish, for what types of ureaplasma, mycoplasma, chlamydia, herpes, HPV, trichomonas, staphylococcus, escherichia coli do you do test from male penis?

At Swish we offer a range of tests based on sexual history. We do not currently test for ureaplasma or mycoplasma and we do not routinely test men for trichomoniasis or staphylococcus or esceherichia coli,  however these can be done if symptoms indicate a need.

Chlamydia is tested for routinely via a urine sample in males,  Herpes is only tested for if there are symptoms present.  Swabs are not routinely taken from the penis as our commonly done tests can be done on a urine sample,  however if symptoms are present, a swab may be taken from the penis to help us make a diagnosis.

To carry out the correct tests we would need to discuss your sexual history with you.

Hello, my boyfriend and I have been together for 7 months now and both of us are free from any sexually transmitted diseases and we are loyal to each other and not in an open relationship. However, I still feel paranoid about being infected via accidents etc because I've read comments online that some people can be infected even doing non sexual and low- to no risk activities such as sharing toothpaste or touching dried bodily fluids. Should I seek mental health advice or is this a result of being too cautious about my health and well-being? Thank you.

If you have any concern about your sexual health you should book an appointment by ringing us on 0300 1245010.

How soon can I be tested for Hepatitis? I've been tested for HIV all clear; would I have been tested for Hepatitis then too? I've been feeling tired alot for a while and achy is this a sign of Hepatitis?

If you email us your details to swish@sompar.nhs.uk we can give you more details.

Hello, I live in university halls and I discovered that the previous tenant that lived in my room left behind some semen underneath and the wall under it. I am certain that it is dry semen and I'm just wondering if it still poses of danger when it comes to transmitting STI's or viruses? Because the area of the desk which has the dry bodily fluid is where I put my hands whenever I pull my chair closer to my desk when I'm studying. I'm just scared about it since my hands will sometimes be dry and cracks.

Please be reassured that you are not at risk of any STIs, we would recommend you get some rubber gloves and cleaning products and give the wall a good clean.

I've been diagnosed with herpes. My boyfriend went to get tested for it to but was asked a load of questions and told he didn't need to be tested for it. He explained that I have more than one medical condition and the nurse told him it was basically my bodies immune system being low and couldn't fight off the bacteria. I just want to know if this is correct or not.

If your boyfriend did not have symptoms during his visit he would not have needed a test. If you have ongoing concerns it may be helpful if you arrange an appointment to meet and talk with a Health Advisor together. You can ring us on 0300 1245010 to arrange this.

Please could you email us at SWISH@sompar.nhs.uk with your original question (above) and with your name and contact details and one of our nurses will contact you today to chat through this with you.

Thanks you so much for your feedback. We know our sit and wait clinics can be very busy and we are glad our staff made the experience positive.

I had sex while using a condom with a new partner for the first time, but unprotected oral. I think I see symptoms that may not be there. Would I be likely to have caught something if they had something or am I worried for no reason?

Oral sex is one of the ways an STI could be passed on. Therefore it would be a good idea for you to get in touch to receive screening rather than continue to worry. You can contact us on 0300 1245010.

I have all the symptoms of genital herpes; I went to the doctor several days ago and he said it might be thrush (did not look) - and gave me canesten which hasn't helped, its getting more and more painful and difficult to walk. You should make an appointment for a full screen so that we can advise  and treat you appropriately. Please get in touch on 0300 1245010.

I regularly attended the clinic in Taunton musgrove with a recurrent problem. Will the same staff be there at the new clinic as I'm extremely anxious about explaining everything again?

I don't like blood tests, can I have a screening without a blood test?

Some STI tests do not require your blood to be taken, for example, testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea usually requires a urine sample from men and a self-taken vaginal swab from women. However testing for some other sexual transmitted infections including HIV and syphilis does require a blood test. You are free to refuse to have your blood taken, however our staff are very experienced at taking blood we would always recommend having a full STI screen

Hi, I have started taking the maexni combin pill since Monday 27th June, all week I have been feeling ill, diarrhoea , was sick twice Tuesday morning after taking the pill at 9pm Monday. Is this a side effect to the pill, if so what should I do?

I have trouble getting wet before sex, this never used to be an issue with my boyfriend but now we have been together 8 months it is very rare I am physically aroused before sex. This correlates with me starting the mini pill Desogestrel, when we used condoms I had a higher sex drive and had no problem getting wet. Could it be my contraception that is affecting this?

Thank you for your question. Changes in libido (sex drive) can, for some people, be affected by hormonal contraception such as Desogestrel; this can be an increase or decrease in libido. We would recommend you make an appointment to discuss this with one of our nurses or doctors as there may be other reasons why you have noticed a change. We offer the full range of contraception and if you need to change method we will discuss these options with you.

We operate walk-in clinics at various points during the week. When you arrive your details will be taken and you will be asked to wait. At times, if the clinic is busy, you will be informed that we have no further slots available and we will try to book you a convenient appointment. The length of wait will depend on how many people have arrived before you but our reception colleagues will always be happy to give you some idea of how long this will be. We are planning on changing the name of our walk-in clinic to ‘sit and wait’ to reflect that you may be able to see someone as soon as you arrive. We are also hoping to make sit and wait appointments available on more days and in more of our venues.

Where should I go to get confirmation of suspected type 2 HSV? I want episodic treatment but don't want to waste my (and GP's) time going to GP if they will refer me to yourselves.

We would advise that if you experience symptoms of HSV to phone our booking line on 0300 1245010 to discuss coming in for a consultation. We would then be able to take samples to confirm HSV typology and commence treatment if clinically required. We would also offer a full STI screen. Please note some GP's can also offer this service.
